Vitamin D is a very vital component in our body. It helps in absorption of calcium, phosphorus and also facilitates the normal functioning of our body immune system. These nutrients are necessary for our body to help maintain the health of our bones, teeth, and muscles.
The major source of Vitamin D is from the sunlight. When exposed to sunlight, our body is able to create Vitamin D.The problem with this source is that, when exposed to too much sunlight, it might cause skin cancer and skin aging and therefore many people opts for other sources. These sources include oily fish, egg yolks, fortified dairy products, red meat and Vitamin D supplements. Children of less than one year should take an average of 8.5 to 10 mcg of Vitamin D a day while those of one year and above should take 10mcg of Vitamin D a day.
A deficiency of Vitamin D in our body causes bone deformities such as scurvy/rickets in children and bone pain in adults. Taking too much Vitamin D supplements may cause a condition called HyperCalcaemia if its done for a very long time. This condition causes damages to heart and kidney and weakening of the bones and therefore one should take an average of 10 mcg a day.
